Rating some of the best mooncake bags you can get in Singapore this year

Is it possible to reconcile these three ideas: good mooncakes, sustainable gifting and enduring fashion during the annual Mid-Autumn festival? Turns out, it may be possible this year, with hoteliers and bakeries in Singapore coming up with mooncakes that are delivered in bags that look good enough to be part of your OOTD.

This year, the mooncake bags out there have minimal branding on it, and most brands can make it tiny or surreptitious enough that it does not affect aesthetics. Seeing that there are so many gorgeous mooncake bags this year, we've decided to rate them based on their attractiveness.

Have you spotted any of these beautiful IT bags on the street (or perhaps tasted the mooncakes from these hoteliers and bakeries) yet?

Mdm Ling Bakery has always been known for its fun collabs (Monopoly mooncakes, anybody?) But they've upped their fashion game for Mid-Autumn Festival this year, coming up with mooncakes stored in these bags that look like they belong in a photoshoot.

Fashun rating: 8/10. Charles & Keith, but make it food.

How to get it: Pick your favourite bag (and mooncakes) on Shopee!

This one is a delight to receive. Housed in a beautiful and silky Furoshiki bag, every purchase of four mooncakes and more will get you this versatile fabric bag featuring the motifs of Extra•Ordinary People, a registered charity supporting persons with special needs. You'll not only be getting yummy mooncakes and a nice bag, but also contributing to the charity’s inclusivity programmes with every purchase.

Fashun rating: 9/10. Take a point off because I cannot bear to use it.

The mooncakes with usable carrier trend may have something to do with Capitol Kempinski's mooncake bag in 2022, which was designed to look like a Christian Dior Book Tote replica. This year, Capitol Kempinski came up with mooncakes delivered in an elegant boat-shaped canvas bag that looks like a good pick-up-and-go daily bag.

Update: You can also get one crafted in collaboration with Gardens by the Bay and The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore. The mooncakes celebrate tradition with a floral twist by infusing the delicate flavours of Rose and Chrysanthemum – two flowers that are featured in Gardens by the Bay’s floral displays. The botanical flavours complement Gardens by the Bay's signature changing floral displays in Flower Dome. Notably, the upcoming "Chrysanthemum Charm" floral display is set to debut on September 29, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The mooncakes are sold in three different sets: The Enchantment ($88), Dusty Rose Collection ($112) and Pastel Pink Collection ($112). Each set presents eight pieces of baked mooncakes in total – with two pieces of Rose Macadamia mooncakes, two pieces of Chrysanthemum Melon Seed mooncakes, two pieces of White Lotus with Egg Yolk mooncakes, one piece of Red Bean Almond mooncakes, and one piece of Walnut Lotus mooncake. The Dusty Rose and Pastel Pink Collections also include a special edition reusable bag that doubles as a stylish tote.

Exclusive deals for Gardens by the Bay visitors: Present tickets at gift shops for 25% off mooncake sets from 21 August till 1 October 2023.

Updated fashun rating: 8/10. Feminine and barbie-core!

How to get it: Go to the website and check out the mooncakes page. While writing this, I also realised that you can get just the bag itself without the mooncake!

Reminiscent of the rattan moon bag that was all the rage a couple of years ago, this one from W Hotel is especially spacey, and even comes with an outer bag to keep the inner one when not in use. For me, it means there are two bags to use. Win!

Fashun rating: 9/10. The green one is Christmas-ready, and the red one is Chinese New Year-ready. +1 for looking super fun!
